Fullerton Nearly Flawless

F
ebruary has brought rain and much delay but March has been madness for the lady Hornet Fastpitch team. After going 3-1 in the Golden West Invitational, the team has been on a terror. During the second round of conference play Fullerton has outscored its opponents 65-4, which has included five shutout victories. In that time span Fullerton has also out hit its opposition 67-19. With a two game lead over rivals Santa Ana and Riverside City Colleges look for the Hornets to finish once again in the upper echelon of the conference standings. Our mission to repeat as defending conference champions is realistic. We must stay healthy, focused, competitive, and stay together to finish the last round of conference as champions.

Fullerton holds a conference team batting average of .334 and the pitching duo of Colleen Burdick and Andee Lindgren a team ERA of 0.25, both these numbers are conference leading statistics. In the individual category of batting Fullerton has three of the top five in Lisa Schiro (.556), Colleen Burdick (.486), and Andee Lindren (.486). In runs scored Fullerton maintains four of the top five positions; Burdick (17), Schiro (13), Macias (9), and Elsesser (9). In the RBI category Schiro leads the conference with (14), Lindgren (13), and Kristen Shea is third with (7).

Coach's Corner:Soliciting and Giving Feedback

What we love to do is teach the game and compete. Teaching how to field and hit is the easy part. Knowing when to bunt and when to hit-and-run seems to come very easy as well. The most difficult tasks surround coordinating the efforts of 12-15 players and putting out the little brush fires that seem to spark up at the worst times.

We are aware that communication is key to the success of every team. I would love to have a nickel for every time that I say the word "communicate" during a season. The transfer and flow of information up and down the ladder is critical. We simply cannot assume that our players understand what communication means; we must teach them what it means and its effectiveness. We must teach them how to create avenues of effective communication that ultimately build the team personality. We have teamwork sessions that comprise of team building strategies, such as, small group discussion of both positive and negative concerns, tinker toy production, Big Bear cabin trips that create an atmosphere that allows us to express ourselves. How do we give feedback to each other - coach to coach, coach to player, player to coach and player to player are difficult issues that have to be addressed in order for the team to be successful.

It is vital to define roles and foster leadership development over the course of the season. Sit down with your sophomores and define their roles and responsibilities. Explain to the freshman what their expectations are and that they too, are important leaders and members of the communication team. Over time, roles change as your players mature and grow into your team leaders. You have to nurture, foster and develop their skills for the betterment of the team. There will continue to be reminders that are ongoing throughout the season that become a part of a regular routine as much as hitting fungo during practice.

 Personal Seat Licensing Becomes Reality

"It will never be Edison Field, but Fullerton College's Fatpitch Softball complex could soon have the look of old Anaheim Stadium. Two years ago, Fullerton purchased 110 box seats that were torn out of Anaheim Stadium and is now raising money to have them installed behind home plate"(Orange County Register). Unfortunately, the look of Anaheim Stadium never materialized. Instead, Fullerton's Maintenance & Operations division allocated $60,000 in renovation during the '2000 campaign. The field now features brand new aluminum bleachers along first and third base, and behind home plate. Behind the plate, you will enjoy the comfort of blue-coated chair back seating, which can seat up to 300 fans. To date, 30 supportive fans have purchased personal seats that they permanately own. You too, can become a seat owner. First and third base sideline seats are $60 and behind home plate $75. Seats are limited to availability. Contact Coach Bassi at 714-992-7390 for your opporunity to become a seat holder.
